The brilliant 2020 Canon looks set to surpass both the 2019 and 2016 as this estate's finest wine since the post-war period, though like many of the best 2020s, it will require more patience than its 2019 counterpart. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with notions of exotic spices and iris, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with vibrant acids and beautifully polished, chalky tannins. Pure and precise, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish. This beautifully constructed wine communicates the essence of this superb limestone terroir, and it will be worth a special effort to track down and cellar.

In the last few years, this sleeping giant has well and truly reawakened, and the 2020 vintage represents the finest Canon produced since the early 1960s. Extensive replanting between 1996 and 2003, overseen by Audebert's predecessor, John Kolasa, saw some 50% of the estate's 22 hectares replaced. The fact that these vines are now arriving at full maturity surely goes some way to accounting for Canon's contemporary renaissance. Now, the team is working on restructuring the rest, combining massal selections and clones. Viticulture is thoughtful, with cover crops across the estate, and the terroir itself is relatively homogeneous: solid limestone covered by some 0.25 to 0.7 meters of clay, with a more or less uniform exposition on Saint-Émilion's plateau. There's also one small parcel in the town itself and another by Berliquet. Today, the vineyard is planted with about 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, and there are no plans to radically alter that. Winemaking privileges finesse over power, though a certain richness and texture can be taken for granted with a site like this, and maturation is in 50% new oak (mostly from Taransaud, Demptos, Sylvain and Quintessence). Today, the focus is on increasing precision and refinement, rather than revolution. And well it might be, for why change a winning team? Published: Apr 06, 2023

Practically infinite on the palate, an expression which truly leaves it's mark on this Bordeaux 2020. Poetry in the glass, showing off the Saint-Emilion vintage in true style. 2019 Château Canon zeigt dunkle, leuchtend purpurrote Farbe. Tiefgründig die Aromen, der Nase bieten sich geröstetes Brot, Kirschlikör und Holunderbeeren. Der Ansatz im Mund wirkt cremig, konzentriert breitet der Wein sich mit dezenter Säure aus. Am Gaumen kommt reife, frische Frucht mit feinem Tannin an. Eleganz dominiert die konzentrierte Textur. Mit seiner perfekten Balance und Finesse ist 2019 Canon ein wahrer Schmeichler, gemacht für langes Leben...chapeau!!

Anfangs subtil, still, sehr, sehr tiefgründig, reife Pflaume, Kirschen, Gräser, ein Hauch Eukalyptus schwingt mit, florale Töne, das ist Bordeaux von seiner schönsten und reinsten Art. Der Gaumen ist konzentriert und dicht, ungemein druckvoll, dabei hochelegant, die Frucht hält sich in ausgezeichneter Balance mit der eindrücklichen Struktur, die Tannine sind mächtig und von höchster Güte, die Säure hält den doch sehr kräftige Wein frisch, hier alles ist alles an seinem Platz, nichts überwiegt. Der Abgang ist von majestätischer Länge und sagt: Das ist einer der ganz grossen Weine des Jahrgangs. Kraft und Finesse in einer perfekten Symbiose. Grosses Potential. 2026-2050+ 98/100 vvPunkte"

One of the few wines I was not able to taste in barrel, what's worth having is worth waiting for. This stunner presents an aromatic display combining crushed rocks, stones, flowers and red fruits. If that wasn't enough, the wine really kicks in on the palate with its freshness, concentration, energy, purity and length, which is the perfect backdrop for all the layers of refined, elegant, silky textured, red fruits along with that often, elusive sense of minerality on the palate and in the finish. The 2019 Canon has turned out brilliantly in bottle, wafting from the glass with complex aromas of raspberries and red plums mingled with notions of raw cocoa, dark chocolate, pencil shavings and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and multidimensional, it's one of the most refined, elegant right bank wines of the vintage, with a deep core of fruit, beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is a superb achievement for Nicolas Audebert and his team.

In the last few years, this sleeping giant has well and truly reawakened, and the 2019 seems to me the finest Canon that Nicolas Audebert and his team have yet produced. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Canon bursts from the glass with expressive notions of baked black cherries, kirsch, plum preserves and black raspberries plus hints of red roses, Ceylon tea, black olives and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, the palate is wonderfully elegant and refined, with a soft, finely grained texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. The blend is 77% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc and it was aged for 18 months in French oak, 50% new. Published: Mar 16, 2020
